Serums are intended to address targeted skin issues by delivering a concentrated amount of nutrients deeper into skin tissues than other topically applied products. They are designed to provide additional support or anti-aging results to skin care regimens or spa treatments. In order to produce results, regimens need the support of all products, and is necessary that serums are used in a regimen along with a moisturizer – serums should never replace moisturizers.

Serums should be used as a targeted treatment for specific skin issues – like a workout for your skin. We participate in multi-beneficial workout activities for overall health such as running, walking, and biking – the same is true for your overall skin regimen. Staying true to the workout analogy, we also participate in activities to tone certain areas of the body, depending on the personal improvements we would like to see – the same is true for using serums in skin care. Serums provide targeted treatments through intensive use for a given period of time. It is recommended that clients use serums for a targeted solution twice daily until the product is gone. And, just like a workout, it is important to let the skin rest between targeted treatments with serums so that a difference in the skin can be seen. After a periodic break from the serum, you may continue with the same targeted treatment to maximize results or switch to another serum for a different treatment- depending on the desired result.

For serums to be effective, it is essential to exfoliate the skin, and to encourage regular exfoliation for home use. If the skin isn’t exfoliated properly, dead cells may block the serum’s access to live cells, hindering results. The use of chirally correct ingredients also helps to improve the efficacy of a serum by providing a more efficient delivery system of the molecules to live cells.

The serum should be applied before moisturizer by smoothing onto the skin twice daily. In all cases, healthier skin should be the targeted goal, and before any regimen can realize results – underlying or problematic skin conditions must be addressed. For example, an acneic client seeking results for hyperpigmentation; in order for this client to reap the benefits of a brightening serum, the acneic condition must be addressed before proceeding to address hyperpigmentation.

Let’s talk about product use measurements. In this case, too much of a good thing really isn’t good at all. Applying too much product per application can greatly hinder your chances of seeing results. We recommend using only 1/8 tsp. of serum for the face per application – roughly the size of a dime:

By using more product than necessary, not only are you wasting product, but the efficacy of the beneficial nutrients decline as they are not given a chance to fully penetrate into the skin. It is also important that serums are not rubbed into the skin, but rather smoothed onto the skin following the lymphatic path. Rubbing can be abrasive to the skin, and the efficacy of active naturals can be reversed due to the friction caused by the rubbing action. Our advice for client’s home use: pump the serum into a dime sized pool on the hand, and dab 1 or 2 fingers into the product then place product onto each area of the face. Using open palms and fingers, gently smooth serum evenly onto the face.
